NOTA DEL DIRECTOR

I’ve been working in televised humor for more than 20 years and Humormatic is, in a way, my most autobiographical and personal project. I know everyone always says the same thing, but it’s true, okay?

Starting from the premise of humor and science fiction, which is where I find it most interesting to focus my short films, Humormatic addresses the real, present-day world of major television networks, censorship, self-censorship and the role and value given to humor in our society.

Throughout my career I’ve come across a bit of everything: I’ve worked with total freedom, with certain limitations that I could understand or even support and, very often, with a clear censorship regarding certain topics and people. Sometimes due to pressure and, many others, simply for trying to please and not annoy anyone. Humormatic addresses the need for humor to annoy, to play the buffoon, and the frustration felt when you aren’t allowed to perform this function or when it isn’t even understood.

Additionally, Humormatic wants to reflect on our current big data society where everything is analyzed with algorithms and the time when machines will be able to do more and more things that we do doesn’t seem too far off. Right now you can already have artificial intelligence write a novel, a screenplay and yes, even a joke. So maybe I should remove the “sci-fi” label from my short film and refresh my professional skills: from scriptwriter to senior technician in Humormatic.
